Brava (2017)

Janine, a bank employee who approves mortgages, is up for a major promotion to a new branch in China, so she’s diligently studying Mandarin. One evening, on the subway ride home, she witnesses two young thugs assaulting an elderly woman. When she tries to intervene, they turn on her, stealing her belongings and sexually assaulting her. Afterward, she sees them attacking another helpless girl but flees instead of helping. That decision haunts her, unraveling her life—the promotion, her relationship, and her independence lose all meaning. Seeking escape, she visits her widowed father in the countryside, who is himself rebuilding after his wife’s death.
