David Ainley, a California-based ecologist, has devoted over three decades to the Ross Sea, a pristine ecosystem he calls a "living laboratory." However, international fishing fleets have now arrived, drawn by Antarctic toothfish—marketed as Chilean sea bass in fine restaurants. This lucrative catch, dubbed "white gold," threatens to unravel the region's fragile balance. Ainley knows that without intervention, this unique haven will be lost.
