The TARDIS is unexpectedly pulled by an unknown energy and touches down on the alien world of Vortis. The Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Vicki quickly become embroiled in a fierce conflict involving a malevolent entity called "The Animus" and its insect-like Zarbi minions, as well as the Menoptra, a butterfly-like species, and their underground allies, the Optera.
