After spending two years at Walden Pond, Thoreau reenters society to apply the lessons he learned about responsible living. He embarks on fresh “experiments” as a surveyor, scientist, and abolitionist, making two additional trips to Maine that reveal even more profound insights about life and the universe. As a chronic illness starts to take its toll, he writes with increasing urgency, compelled to share his newfound understanding.
