Defying her father Edgar Linton’s stern warning against trespassing, young Catherine ventures beyond the estate’s borders, where she encounters her charming yet ailing cousin and the rugged Hareton, both mistreated sons of the wealthy Heathcliff residing on the Earnshaw estate. This encounter prompts a flashback to Heathcliff’s childhood as Catherine’s closest companion, raised by her benevolent father, Mr. Earnshaw. Following Mr. Earnshaw's death, his son returns from boarding school, now married, and demotes Heathcliff to a stable boy, subjecting him to relentless cruelty just to stay close to Catherine. After a chance meeting with the refined Edgar Linton, Catherine falls for him, much to Hindley’s satisfaction, driving Heathcliff away.
