James encounters Basil Courtney, a ranch hand for a nearby farmer. Basil has a colorful background, having worked in a circus, taught, and developed a keen appreciation for art and fine wine. James finds him fascinating until he learns that Basil has neglected to administer the necessary treatments to the farmer's calves, leaving them with no signs of recovery.
