Simon takes a stand for a fellow student who is being bullied, but the boy reveals he has violent intentions towards his aggressors. Meanwhile, Robbie playfully nicknames Ruthie, who retaliates by creating an unflattering name for Lucy after her engagement to Jeremy ends in New York. Eric is visited by an old friend, Merle, who shares her own family troubles. Additionally, Mary becomes determined to follow her dream of becoming a firefighter, but her aspirations take an unexpected turn.
